Google has developed a prototype wearable device based on the communicator in Star Trek. In science fiction, Captain Picard and his crew used their lapel pins to talk to the artificial intelligence and crew onboard the Starship Enterprise. In real life, the search giant created a circular device with a built-in microphone and Bluetooth allowing it to connect to a smartphone. The idea was to make it easier for people to query to Google without having to fish out their cell phones.
Although the device did not make it to the production phase, it shows Google’s human centered focus. There already exists several ways of communicating with mobile devices without physically interacting with them but the designers chose the route of the star trek communicator because this design appealed to them and their users.
